Dear Parent/Guardian,
This fall, your child’s class will participate in Oregon’s Kid Governor®, a national award-winning civics program led by the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office (SOS) and created by The Connecticut Democracy Center. Fifth graders across the state will learn about state government, voting, and the importance of civic engagement through a real election for Oregon’s Kid Governor.
In the weeks leading up to Election Day in November, your child’s class will explore lessons about Oregon’s three branches of state government, voting and elections, and campaign platforms. All students will learn how to vote and how to run for office. They may choose to support a fellow student running for Kid Governor at the school level or they may want to run as a candidate themselves. If your child runs for office and wins the school primary, they will be a potential candidate in the statewide race to become Oregon’s Kid Governor or a Cabinet Member. Real candidates get approval from their families before running for office and your child should, too.

Remember that the spirit of Oregon’s Kid Governor is not based upon winning and losing, but about students learning that they can have a positive impact on their communities!
